GUEST POST: Review of Tanjint Wiggy's You're Young For A Long Time

Hi, I’m Richard Blacksher. I’m a musician.

I’m a firm believer in this musical truth: Hip-Hop belongs to the 19 year olds. OutKast, Ice Cube,

Mobb Deep, Carter era Weezy, the list goes on. But what sustains Hip-Hop is when it matures. It’s

The Blueprint that elevated Hip-Hop to the fashion houses. It’s 808’s & Heartbreak that allowed rappers

to sing over autotune. Like Naomi defeating Serena, the young rappers have the energy to keep the

work going, but it’s the older MCs that break down the barriers. Because when Hip-Hop grows up, as it

tends to do, rappers find it easier to express themselves off the mic. The appeal of superficial rhymes

turn to regrets, reflections, sometimes even remorse. Songs become conversations; therapy over

instrumentals. 4:44, DAMN , Because the Internet , are a few of my favorites. Something happens to a

rapper when they turn 30+. It becomes easier to observe the zeitgeist and “pop a wheelie” on it.

Tanjint’s latest album You’re Young for a Long Time, continues that tradition.

Tanjint’s album plays like the kind of Friday night kickback we find ourselves at this age with

nothing but a great playlist, wine, weed, and great conversation. Compared to the hatred I felt about

the house parties I went to in my 20s that were loud, crowded, and one joint for twelve people

(how did COVID not come in 2013?), You’re Young for a Long Time provides the kind of experience I

didn’t know how much I’ve missed through this pandemic.

Sonically: We are fortunate to be in a time where the IE has well-regarded artists in a multitude of

genres. From Cumbia, Rap, EDM, Jazz (yes I’m plugging myself), etc.--but damn does it feel good to

hear something that sounds underground. You’re … is not packaged as the most (dare I say) “polished” package of music, but that’s a huge part of why

I keep coming back to it. Whatever flaws that come across on the album seem only to be because of

how different it sounds compared to everything else that’s out. Charlamagne told a 36 y/o Kanye that

“Yeezus sounds like an incomplete album”. Hindsight.

Tanjint’s beat selection tastefully curates a journey through what feels like the days when Stones Throw’s only press were the classic mid-00s [adult swim] bumps. Remember when people didn’t know Nujabes, Fat Jon, Dilla, and Madlib? The music rings out like a playlist of the best unheard beats from that era while the blunt is being passed by the charcuterie board. And on a less confident MC, Tanjint’s accelerated flow would come with a “Don’t Try This At Home'' label; yet his approach on each track of You’re Young… is skillfully executed over variating cadences and tones. To be blunt (no pun intended), his approach is unparalleled to any contemporary rapper that I’ve encountered in recent years.

Thematically: Tanjint guides the listeners through what feels like a warm gathering of friends,

old and new. The intro “Welcome to the Late Show,” makes it apparent that this is a celebration of life!

For real, parties in your 20s often come with the unexplained expectations that you’re supposed to

leave with something: maybe a girl’s number, maybe some new friends, maybe just a hangover.

But, as someone who still hates parties, it’s different in our 30s: you leave with an unopened bottle of

wine, new insight about the article someone read on Linkedin, or sometimes just peace. And it’s that

aspect of hanging out with the same folks that you used to live recklessly with but now have gotten

more mature, more reflective, that Tanjint captures so eloquently in this album.

I have too many favorites to name. “Goji Brothers” reminds me of my own changing

relationships with my siblings as we’re living separate lives as separate families.

“To Come of Age” reminds me of the trauma I’m still processing of my father’s death ten

years ago. “May 5th” reminds me of my personal struggles grasping to my Latinx identity that

still never felt like mine. The title track, “You’re Young for a Long Time” voices how I feel on a

daily basis of dealing with all of life’s lemons; “I’ve kept it tight, I’m tired, I wanna unwind”.

But even based on the few tracks that I’ve listed, it’s obvious that this isn’t an album for everybody.

It’s introspective that requires a commitment to want to engage in not only the answers that Tanjint is

asking the listener but also for the listener to want to ask those very same questions of themselves.

With the advent of social media, youth is no longer wasted on the young. There is a fear within

millennials that we’re growing old and no longer valued the same way we did not value the generations

before us. We’re desperate to cling on to the trends, to be in the know, to face our inevitable 40s. But

the freedom Tanjint expresses here makes it apparent that growing up is a blessing, and youth is

found in your state of mind, not in TikTok influenced art. With that understanding, we all can be young...

for a long time.

“loves company…” : write-up on INVISIBLE MISERY by CALMFIXUP

“Shake them bones you’ll feel no sorrow / you may end up in a grave tomorrow”

The more I listen to the rock albums of my comrade in West Coast Avenging, Calmfixup, the more I feel like his singer-songwriter journey is a story of building emotional armor. His first album The Last Time I Start Over is this naked cry of the last moments of youth saying I’m still confused, I’m still figuring life out but I’m gonna be confident about it going forward.

His new record Invisible Misery is like Tony Stark built his armor – the lyrics are less nakedly vulnerable than the last album but they’re still honest, just with more craft. Meneses (the alter ego secret identity of Calmfixup) is a great singer who never falters but something I keep hearing from people is they want the vocals on these records louder.

Sonically, TLTISO reminds one of Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana while IM reminds me of the Beths and A Perfect Circle. Listening to his singer-songwriter arc over the years, Calmfix is like a petri dish of rock paradigms – it sounds to me like he has all the styles mastered and he gets to deploy them to express his own particular brand of thoughtful and plaintive poetry. The sound is bigger and more confident than ever before. The songs are catchy as hell from “Dubious” to the chill and hypnotic “Belle”. “Tad” is ominous, “Fell” is wonderfully poppy. The whole album is that strong albeit a bit brief – it’s a melodic tour de force with smart rhythm as ballast : witness the misery.

RiBs: Reviews In Brief of new albums by Cam Gnarly / Noa James & Calmfixup!

If Peace of Cake found Noa James shedding his growl for a spacy strange proclamation of his love for all life on earh, Gnarly Orca finds him making those ideas sound familiar over incredibly effective and infectious bleeding edge new hip-hop in collaboration with one of the Inland Empire's parallel Buddhas, Cam Gnarly, a favorite of mine from these parts.

The quality of the production of this album can't be overstated, every synth shines, every drum crisp and every melody links flawlessly with Gnarly's clever sung refrains and James' enlightened earnest baritone. Noa sings throughout as well, perhaps most notably on the EP's closer "My Folks" where the duo establish a new shout-out anthem.

Gnarly sounds as confident as ever and at home on spacy smooth stony melodic chillers such as each track here. "Lifting Me Up" has him with his classic cadence and a chorus, like most here, that could double as a mantra of self-improvement and manifesting one's most majestic desires.

Both of these artists have espoused the spirituality of posi-waves for years now. There was never any doubt that their content could mesh well in that way. What is a delightful if not shocking surprise was how perfect the project would be musically as well. The lyrics are original and life-affirming and barsy as they need to be to do the beats justice but are more focused on connecting with earth-beings at their most vulnerable and chillactimous. The mood the album strikes, the tones it hits in its short but substantial 5 tracks, the sincere and musical way in which our stars use their voices to share with you their good news about existence all comes together to make one of the year's most delicious delights and just in time before the year's final quarter is out! Chill to this record, you won't regret it.

The elusive multi-instrumentalist, performer and studio wizard for the West Coast Avengers (my) crew has shocked WCA's followers by dropping a complete hard rock and singer-songwriter guitar song filled album. Calmfix displays a hilarious and self-deprecating awareness in his lyrics, an original but warm and familiar sense of melody, pop sensibility for days and indefatigable rock chops. Every part of this record is by Calmfixup- from every instrument to the vocals to the engineering, mastering and album art. The album has echoes of alt-rock legends like Stone Temple Pilots and Nirvana but there's also a refreshing and clean modernity that makes this album ready made for any mood- like the man himself, the songs traverse trivial topic matter, depressing realities about humanity and lots of thoughtful yet animated navel-gazing observations in between perhaps best summarized by Fix's proclamation, "I calculate every little thing 'cept everything I probly should". Groove to the guitar ballads and rock out to the thrashers, particularly my favorite "Habit". After this air tight debut, Calmfixup shouldn't have to start over again any time soon but when he does, I'll be here for it- you should too!

ARTIST: ITAL SANTOS
VIDEOGRAPHER: ITAL SANTOS & GEORGE BURNS aka JORGE QUEMAS

The latest of Ital Santos’ trilogy of music videos for his new Reflections instrumental LP depicts some of the I.E.’s finest, just doing what they do, with no plans of leaving. I love the everyday celebration of 909 life these guys display and the music is funky and substantial, even without lyrics in this instance. Put something in the air and head nod to this.

4square with Cam Archer, MC Lyfe, RasJosh Beats, So Cal Street Team & More!

Welcome to the latest 4square installment from JooseBoxx!

MUSICIAN: Cam Archer
ALBUM TITLE: Spirit Gunner
ALBUM ART BY: K.I.T.

Archer:

"The idea to go with an Akira inspired cover on this album was technically Kit. I had a similar idea but involved me actually in front of a car. We had discussed a homage to Akria in the past and this album made a lot of sense to put it into action. It plays well off of certain areas of the story within the album and the different emotions that went into it. The energy of the album I guess you could say, had some Akira in it. Especially from Testsuo's point of view.

Kit is the best artist I personally know and one of the best I've seen due to him immense versatility. I can give him a concept idea and 90% of the time he takes it and brings it to life exactly the way I had envisioned. Even when there are alterations to be made, I know they'll be done with great detail. As for the time at which this cover came about, I would say the album concept and length was already decided. However, he started working on it in another room during the very first recording session for the album."

K.I.T.

"Well, the covers were really extensions of the individuals I see them both as. For the Transition, the artwork was a far cry from previous work I had done with CJ mainly because the focus was on him instead of the concept of the record at hand. Compared the single artwork for Be Free and Pina Colada, the Transition is an artistic rendition of not a theme, but a quality I had gotten to observe over time. The proudest moment I had taken apart of was Jig's wedding day and i've never seen him more in his element. So as the gradient of drafting increases from college ruled lined paper to a final digital render of the man himself, the middle ground where he made a commitment to the woman he wants to spend eternity with felt like the middle ground with which he will stand upon, regardless of the hardships he'll most certainly encounter in changing his moniker. That cover basically drew itself to be honest haha.

For Cam's cover, the idea was much less tangible and shifted from concept to concept. He's obviously a big fan of japanese culture, sports, video games and the like, so the ideas given started with the initial inspiration of Yu Yu Hakusho but hit a wall early on. As he had me sit in on sessions for SpiritGunner, I got a better feel of the direction he wanted to take the visual design. A thread that ties together these two covers in particular is the bond shared between members of Half Valve and OE. There's no yes-men in our collectives (respectively) so subpar work won't reach the masses 9 out of 10 times. Speaking from such stipulation, members of both camps trust my artistic vision and if all else fails, will let me take the wheel in putting together something fye. I dropped the idea of doing an Akira homage and having the 5.0 from the first cover make a return and Cam responded with a Drake meme and it was lit. I painted most of said cover during the session for Nights and completed it before we finished the BGIV track. The back cover was inspired by a Yoshiro Togashi promo piece and actually went through two drafts before getting it right. The OG draft is the first time i've put myself into any of my clients work. "

MUSICIAN: MC Lyfe
ALBUM TITLE: Efyl
ALBUM ART BY: Jay Reed

Lyfe:

"When I was broke and in the streets I would go to the top of the city, smoke and think: one day I'm gonna be known in my city. I'm gonna do great things and become a success. All while being a broke kid on top of a mountain. The irony is funny cause even at my lowest point I managed to still be on top of the world in a sense. I would sit there and think like 'Damb, this happened over there, I did this over here, I smoke over with so and so in that lot...I went to school there, lost my virginity over there like- damn, this city has really seen the best and worst of me and now when i go to the top I smoke and remind myself where I once was compared to where I am now and to where the future will lead me next.
MUSICIAN: RasJosh Beats & Tanjint Wiggy
ALBUM TITLE: Inland Imperial
ALBUM ART BY: Ryan Gaffin, Cash Tijerina of New Culture Media Group & Tan Nguyen of CopyCats

Tanjint:

"I wanted something that evoked our last West Coast Avengers group album, “The Inland Empire Strikes Back”,  but also just something really attention grabbing. I knew I wanted a juxtaposition of the fantastical and the street. Ryan Gaffin got to showing me photos he had taken of Fontana. I saw the ones that made the front and back cover and just knew if we added Star Wars crafts to them I’d have what I wanted.
Something about the electrical tower’s geometry made me think of an Imperial Star Destroyer. I was wondering how we could turn the tower into a Star Destroyer when Cash suggested we depict a Star Destroyer crashing INTO the tower. Once he did the Photoshop work to make that happen I knew I had my cover. Cash knows me well because when I said it reminded me of the Led Zeppelin I cover, Cash said he was inspired to make an homage to that image by the black-and-white coloration of Ryan Gaffin’s photos. I don’t remember ever explicitly telling how much I like Zeppelin but either way he knew, so the confluence of Fontana and Star Wars and classic rock homage made me very pleased with it. "

MUSICIAN: So Cal Street Team
ALBUM TITLE: SQUAAAAD 2
ALBUM ART BY: Wellington Rawls

Yung Miss (of SCST):

"I came up with the concept from a picture of us I have as my desktop screensaver.
Basically the same picture just updated with our separate looks after growth.

Seeing the picture whenever I logged on to work always inspired me to make something happen."

3. MC Mega- Reborn (video) dir. by Komboa

From October of last year through February of this year when people would ask me, "who is that artist dude in your garage?" I would show them this video  I loved this video then but even now as Brandon Bailey operates under new monikers such as Gandalf the Black, B. The Wizard, part of Bass Shamans and more, it seems more apparent than ever that this song and piece showcase a lot of the themes that would be and are still important to this creative force.

RIBS for the Week of 9/23/2015 featuring Epyk, Evil P, RasJosh Beats, Ars N Nay, Spok Beats, Rokem and more

Reviews In Brief from staff writer Tristan Douglas’ week

1. Evil P x RasJosh Beats collabo

This instrumental collaboration between Patrick Placentia and RasJosh speaks for itself. But I’d like to add that this track makes me think of Ice Cube maddogging people in a lowrider.

2. Epyk- Feeler

Epyk is a really nice guy but you wouldn't know it from his raps

3.

Bone Solyd and Rokem – Jazz Spectrum

Really enjoyed this EP. Fresh, melodic, chill stuff. Check it out!

4.

Ars N Nay - The Launch

Just bumped this whole album; great stuff. Ars n Nay are confident without being cocky, smart without being boring, hard-hitting but still chill. Both MCs are solid and engaging, their beat choices are always on point. I appreciate their depiction of working class life in the I.E. and the 626.

5. Spok Beats – Lions9

RIBS (Reviews In Brief) for the week of 9/16/2015 ft. Asend, Kordisepz, Mr.Sham, Belzar, RasJosh Beats, Kaine

from staff writer Tristan Douglas’ week
1.

Asend Beats – After Hours EP

Asend is an MPC-wielding boom-bapping funkmaster who keeps a doobie lit. Don’t miss his soothingly melodic and chill first release, the After Hours EP

2.

Kordisepz- Infekt & Rejektz beat tapes

Both of these whole tapes are dopeness… Kordisepz knows hip-hop but he sounds destined to score crazy films in my opinion. His music will challenge and entertain you.

Rejektz was put out by Us Natives, Peep them at usnatives.bandcamp.com

3. SoundCloud Overview: Mr. Sham

Mr.Sham is the artist that not only got me more into poetry and spoken word but also got me into the melding of the two. As one of the main MCs in West Coast Avengers, he provides fun nerdcore paintings in verse form but as a poet in his own right he is one of the most formidable image-machines and expressers of the heart that I have ever come across. His recent works with RasJosh Beats “Prowlin’” (co-produced by GL Kool) and “Robbin’” are dark and spacious in their booming post-society yet urban sound. Others with RasJosh such as “Geronimo” incorporate nerdcore and uptempo bass for a fun and still slick product. As West Coast Avengers (full disclosure: my group!) enter the half year point of promoting their latest LP (The Inland Empire Strikes Back), expect more leaks from their individual members like this… https://soundcloud.com/seanbobo/geronimo

4.
Kaine aka NoEnd MC - "Ramen & Tacos" Teaser & Bad Chemistry EP

NoEnd Emcee AKA Kaine of Institute Esylum is one of those dudes who has crazy bars and when you stop and listen to his work you realize it’s an incredibly cynical and razor sharp perspective on society, human nature and institutions. Check out his Bad Chemistry EP for some ear candy and peep his new “Ramen & Tacos” teaser and get hyped for his hella IE-repping project coming soon. http://soundcloud.com/kainetheinsane/bad-chemistry-unbroken-chain
