Review of Noa James’ “Intelligent Elegant Elephant : Humble Power” EP

It’s been months since I had the opportunity to meet and interview Mr. Noa James. It’s an experience I’ll cherish forever. Now I have the opportunity to finally review some of his work. So let’s get to it and check out what the “Intelligent Elegant Elephant” has to say.

1990 North Raymond Ave ft. Phantom Trett

Classic type beginning. Then Noa comes on. Automatically it reminds me of his live show. The flow is chopped up into sections but the lyrics are raw. Phantom Trett on the hook, I assume. He has a nice voice and the hook lyrics are pretty dope but something about it is a little off. Hmm can’t exactly call it. Let’s see if I can next time it comes up.

You can’t tell I’m happy? My heart and my minds in a different place

I lost weight and I gained faith

Honestly Noa’s flow is not the type I usually enjoy. Too much space between the phrases and it sounds elementary sometimes but the emotion in his voice brings me back in whenever I find myself losing interest. That’s a good skill to have as an artist. Rawness

Humble Power ft. Faye Valentine

I like the production on this joint. I think I’ve heard this track before. Maybe even watched a video as well! I like this joint. Even though I haven’t been impressed much by some joints I’ve heard her featured on,I think Faye Valentine did her thing on this cut… Two thumbs up! Smooth shxt. As for Noa James…. I kind of wished he would have softened up his voice for this joint. He still coming off raw and this joint is more like a vibe track. Woulda liked the big cuddly teddy bear that I know is inside of Noa James to come out for this one. ::shrug::

Brezell Allen ft Ms. James

Oh la la… I like this beat! Ooh weee…. & Noa James doing his thing.. I see you.. Different than what I’d like to hear on a beat like this but Noa stays true to his style and I can’t be mad at that! I like the hook as well. Thought it was a male singer at first but guessin Ms. James is just a tenor. I ain’t mad! The hook is really soulful and gives the open mic sound to the track. Noa killin’ the second verse! Bridge is nice as well. Solid track!

Leticia Musgrove ft. Paddi Stone, Jynxx, & Curtiss King

Bong hits! Oh how I miss them… ::sigh:: but anyway… Okay female rapper on first verse.. Nice touch. She goin’ in too.. Ay! Paddi Stone? Good shxt! I’mma have to look her up. I like her voice and flow as a combination. Almost reminds me of Honey Cocaine but less “ratchett” lol. Jynxx up next I’m guessin’. Interesting flow and voice. Noa comes on with the rawness again sounding like he blacked out while rappin’ & just decided to go in. Gotta love it! Where Curtiss at though?! Did I miss something? L Was looking forward to his verse.. Must be him on the beat.. If so.. I see you Mr. King!

Dark Passion ft Faye Valentine

Sounds like some 70’s porno type shxt in the intro lol. Choppy flow from Noa. Fits tho I guess… Faye killin this joint too.. damn… I’m finally impressed.. Hooks are on point. Enjoying this second verse from Noa James a lot more than the first. The flow “flows” a lot better and I find myself nodding my head as I type. Then the hook comes on and Faye steals the show… ugh! Ending is sexy as hell too…. One of my fave tracks on this EP so far.. good shxt..

YOKOZUNA

UGHHH!!! RAAAWWWWW!! I remember he performed this track at the Glass House.. came on stage with a Jason mask.. belly bouncing …sweat pouring… UGHH!!! Raw! Lol… Loved it!

It’s the muthafuckin’ MONSTA!

“The rappin’ version of Yokuzuna”yup.. pretty much a great description of Noa James as an artist! Body slammin’ niggas! Lol

I will never be a believer that Keri Hilson is the new Aaliyah

I fuck ya bitch while she pregnant and bust a nut on your unborn daughter’s tounge

Haha! Wow.. I member hearing him say that then he made this face à -__-

CLASSIC! Love this song!

Speak It! Ft Javonte, Thr33zy mcFly, & Curtiss King

Smooth shxt. I like the beat.. how it goes from that snare to that smooth ass clap.. Beautiful! Lovin’ this hook too…. “Speak it into existence” Beautiful! Great choice of features for this joint. Everybody did their part and the result was an amazingly chill ass track. Two thumbs up!

“Told my mom I sold a beat & that’s a doorknob on her mansion” – Curtiss King

Damn I feel you on that one bruh!! Tryna get my mom a Benz… So far I got two tires toward that bxtch! I’m working thooo!!.... Lovin’ the vocalist as well… Great job!

In A Nutshell

I was feelin this EP. Pretty great example of Noa James and his style. If I had any advice I would say be more creative with the flow and find the balance between your style and your creativity. I’m excited to hear more. So far his music makes me wanna smoke a blunt and crump! Lol ::shrug::

Interview with Producer/Engineer Freak James

I was recently able to get in an interview with Moreno Valley Producer/Engineer Freak James who is also the man behind Full Range Inc., one of the most popular studios in the Inland Empire right now. Enjoy the interview ad read it if you are interested in learning more about the producer and his business Hustle Hard!

YM : How are you? Lol
FJ: I'm great.. a bit tired.. but that's normal (don't sleep much)

YM: Trust me...I feel you on that one! For those who don't know you, can you tell us a little about yourself? (age, background? Any basic info you'd like people to know about yourself)
FJ: My name is RJ.. a few know me as Freak Jamez. Not a rambler so I guess I'll just say I'm an engineer/ producer/ artist/ writer.. I love music & movies.. lol. I own and operate Full Range Studio in Moreno Valley, CA. I have a pretty long list of clients.. longer for engineering than production (so far).

YM: How did you get into audio engineering and production? How long have you been doing both FJ: I got into engineering through my desire to produce with no real help on either end. So I ended up self-teaching. I've been doing both 10+ years, let's say.

YM: How did the Full Range studio get started? Or what made you decideto open one up?
FJ: Full Range had been a home studio for years.. it was just called "RJ's".. lol. In my last place it was in a bedroom. The vocal booth was a closet under the stairs. I was doing other things for money, besides engineering/ producing at the time. Those things kinda fizzled out so I decided to expand the studio. My (artist) partner & I had already had a company called Full Range Inc., so I just used that as the studio name.

YM: Same here! So what do you think about the future of music in the. Inland Empire? Are there any artists in the area who "stand out" or are underratted, in your opinion?
FJ: The future of music in the IE.. The future is a hard call. I do know that there is some amazing talent in the IE. Many though, don't understand what it truly takes to make a break through in the biz. There are a few that stand out for sure. To avoid seeming biased I'll leave it at that.. Can't have my clients pissed at me for leaving them out. The underrated part, not so much.. I think the "rate" part comes with some hustle. If you're very talented with no hustle/ grind, its your fault nobody's "rating" you. West Coast music overall I think is overlooked thought. That's probably a whole other interview..

YM: What are your rates & Where is your studio located?
FJ: My rates are: $35/hr for studio time.. 4hrs for $120.. 8hrs for $200.. $250+ per song for production (recording, track and mix included). Other specific stuff you may need to call for prices. The studio is located in Moreno Valley, CA.(951) 907-8199 call, text or email (thestudio.fullrange@gmail.com) for the address.. by appointment only so I don't want to just throw the address out there.

YM: Where can we check out some examples of your work?
FJ: Examples of my work.. hmmm.. Almost anywhere in the IE.. most artists in Moreno Valley. I throw some track examples on: www.reverbnation.com/freakjamezbeatz but I don't really keep up with it. I have stuff on a few shows on MTV, Bad Girls Club.. just got a couple movie placements.. uhh..www.youtube.com/zeenietown, It may be best to contact me. I have stuff all over the place.. different genres.. different types of recordings (mixtapes, remixes, production, etc)

YM: Any shoutouts?
FJ: Shoutouts.. everybody who records with me.. My inner circle is small.. but my circle is pretty big..

YM: Thanks again for your time :)
FJ: Thank You

Review of LP’s Mr. Penland & The Library

Man so I know it’s been awhile since I’ve been able to drop a review.. My bad yall.. Blame it on my new work and school schedule but I haven’t forgotten about yall! Tonight imma be reviewin’ an album from my boy LP, formerly from the two man group Square Biz alongside Moreno Valley’s own Theory Ole. He dropped this like what…last year? I’m not 100% sure but he sent it to me and I never got a chance to check it out so tonight I’m putting my phone on silent and checking out “The Library”. Let’s get it! CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE EP AND LISTEN ALONG!

Learning to Live

Oh okay… the song starts off real simple but when it drops and the vocals come in it kind of reminds me of a 80s type of techno-pop love song. I especially like the harmonies in the hook. Very creative. The verse is a bit simple…from the beat to the way the verse is delivered. It has me really wanting the hook to come back already…. But let me rewind and take a closer listen to what exactly he is saying.

You kicked me in the teeth

As I was headed for the door

& I can see you speak

But I can’t hear you anymore

Okay! I see you…. Different but I really like that last line. The mixing and mastering on this track is extra clean! Props to whoever was the engineer behind this track. Beautiful work.

The bridge is simple but maan! Nuts…that stutter of the vocals was pretty dope… J Nice track.

Picture Of You

Hmm… not sure if I like the production on this joint. Seems a bit simple and the sounds are a bit generic but let’s see if the rest of the song delivers. Okay! LP starts singing and I really like his verse! Almost makes the verse ten times better….I really enjoy LP’s vocals. I don’t hear any struggle in the execution of him hitting his notes and his tone is like a piece of crystal dipped in cream. Lol weird visual right?! I mean I’m just sayin’ he isn’t like a Luther Vandross with runs all over the place but his vocals are definitely clean!!.....But anyway I don’t think I like the hook on here too much … it’s like along with the beat it comes off a bit corny… The verses on this joint kill tho!... I like the bridge too… The beat actually changed up and got interesting for a minute. I do like the hook lyrics too just not the overall sound of it all together.

I’ve got a picture of you where ever I go

A sweet reminder from you to me that I’m never alone

Straight No Chasers ft. Theory Ole

Okay! Square Biz!! Let’s see what they do with this one!... I like the fact that even though the beat is a different type.. the style still relates to t he other tracks I’ve heard so far… The hook is pretty solid… I like it! Time for Theory’s verse & he doesn’t disappoint as usual.

I aint got a lot of time so I’ma give it to you straight girl

One shot, one glass is all it takes girl

& she complainin she don’t like the way it taste

But the salt around the rim make it easier to take girl

I woulda liked to see a video for this joint. It’s never too late! So I see this is a showcase track for Theory with LP just on the hooks so far. That’s cool.. Hope LP at least does a bridge on here tho.. Let me keep listenin’…Hmm guess not.. What’s next?

Time ft. Theory Ole

Another piano ballad type track. This isn’t my type of track and I’d usually press next on a joint like this but usually the boring tracks are saying something deep so I’mma rewind and check out the lyrics.

Time is all I fear

Its why I just keep runnin’

The quest for love was all that you and I held dear

With the beat still in your head

And the good book by your bed

We will survive

Seems like it would make a dope poem read at an open mic but the song is making me sleepy and it is 1:53 in the morning *yawn* I’mma keep listening tho. Oh! I found a line a like!

Good friends well you can count them on one hand

And they’ll never judge you no matter your crime, crime, crime

I know that I can include you

& youll forgive me in the fullness of time, time, time

I like the piano runs in the back. I don’t think that’s what they are called but in the ending hooks listen closely… You know when a child starts at a high note on the piano and runs their finger all the way to the lower notes? Yea! That’s what’s goin on! What’s that called again? Oh.. Theory is on this joint too? Lemmie change the title . One sec. Okay. Done.

White Lies

Last track! Let’s see if LP ends it with a bang! Lovin’ the beat!!! Ugh! DOPE!! Quality sounds a little low on this joint but it might be on purpose… I’m digging this. It kind of reminds me of Calvin Harris and/or The Eurythmics. Love how the quality comes back in clean. Dang! This song is lowkey amazing! This is like a song I’d see a video too in the morning while watching mtvU on campus at Moreno Valley College.

White Lies, just another white lie

I do it to get close to you

& I will tell a million more

Who the fuck produced this shxt?! FourteenK? LP did you do this? This is epic as hell! Lovin’ it!... Whoever made it.. Major Props! This is something Kanye woulda hoped his ass on and killed a verse…. Sorta like he does with his singer…uhhh dang! Ummm Mr… Mr…Mr. Hudson!!!! Yea! Him! This reminds me of something he would do to… I WANT A VIDEO! Make it happen!

In A Nutshell

I am pleasantly surprised by this EP and I wish I would have checked it out sooner. LP you get some new found respect from me. You are definitely an underrated artist in the Inland Empire. Your style is unlike what most artists out here are doing. I’d like to hear more.. maybe work with some new producers….and new features…. Keep your engineer tho!! You are definitely onto something. Can’t wait to hear more… Keyword: GET IN A STUDIO!!! ;)

Theory Ole "Too Prideful" (VIDEO)

Theory Ole is back with a new visual for his track "Too Prideful", which I can definitely say is one of my favorites off of his latest album "The Glass Ceiling". Seems like everytime I get into an argument with "mines" and I feel like being the bigger person, I turn this track on then tweet.. "Fuck it! We goin' out tonight! ::shrug:: ... Theory was definitely spot on with his description of a every other day occurence in serious relationships. So big props for that! Enjoy the video yall! *presses play*
